There were steps to bringing him back, like with anything. Someone like Alanna might think it was a matter of brute force, a blast of magic and a strong enough Gift to undue the work of the gods. No, this was an intricate art. Before he could bring him back, he had to bring his body back.
Well, before all that, he had to get his body. The position of Master did grant him many privileges, but unlimited access to royal corpses was not one of the. It took great debate, convincing, and more than a few back room deals. He dreaded to think what it would be to get the body of a royal anyone cared about.
No, no one cared about him. A traitor and an attempted assassin. A victim of his sister’s blade. This was the last person he should be trying this on.
If anyone were to ask (which no one did), he would claim that it was a matter of magic, that the other person had to be strongly Gifted to be brought back. But if he was honest (which he was not), he would have admitted a certain fascination with the smiling stranger, little that he had known him.
The fascination grew as he began the process, going over each piece of the well-preserved body, seeing where the most work was needed. The wounds in his chest needed to be sealed. The built up gases released from his organs. The fluids returned to those striking, beautiful eyes. He spent his days stitching and stretching and soaking and just taking moments to lay his hands on the beautiful material for his re-creation.
This body was becoming a monument to his craftsmanship, the subtle but powerful work that only someone like himself was capable of. And soon, the flesh would be inhabited once more and he would have someone who could understand the true art. Alanna would be angry, but only because she did not understand. For all of her healing, she did not know the true beauty if repairing on this level, of bringing together parts that everyone else had given up as lost.
Then, it was finally ready. Lying in the tub of water and herbs, he looked as if he could have been alive, but for the waxiness in his skin and the missing light in his reconstructed eyes.
He took a moment to gaze at his work. His whole body was fit to bursting with borrowed magic, but he still needed to take this last moment, done with his creating, before its true owner came home.
He laid trembling lips to that regal brow, bestowed a single kiss, then went about offending the gods themselves.
*
It was hours before his eyes began to move of their own accord. He looked down in their shining blue and wanted to sob at the wonder of it all. He did manage to compose himself enough for a greeting.
“Hello, Duke Roger. My name is Thom of Trebond. You may remember my sister. She killed you. And I just brought you back.”
